Battlefield Play4Free announced. See the first trailer inside for FREE

Earlier this week, the executive producer for the Battlefield franchise revealed plans to announce a new Battlefield title this Friday. Well, it’s Friday - and it turns out that the new title is Battlefield Play4Free, a free-to-play PC shooter scheduled to launch in Spring 2011.

Unlike its cartoony free-to-play predecessor Battlefield Heroes, Battlefield Play4Free looks much more like a traditional Battlefield title. "We broke new ground in 2009 with the launch of Battlefield Heroes; a game that has 6M registered players worldwide. Now we are complementing that arcade shooter with a core, realistic Battlefield shooter experience that fans have been clamouring for," says senior producer James Salt. "Battlefield Play4Free is for serious shooter fans who are looking for a premium – but free – experience that rivals top console titles."

The game will feature 32-player online matches, popular maps from Battlefield 2, and classes and weapons from Battlefield: Bad Company 2. As you play, you’ll learn new combat skills and will earn in-game currency that you’ll be able to spend on weapons and equipment. We assume that this is where micro-transactions will come into play, but with its more realistic and traditional aesthetic, we don’t expect to see any silly Team Fortress 2-style hats for sale. You can head to the official site to register for Battlefield Play4Free’s closed beta program, which is scheduled to launch on November 30.

why would it come to consoles? First of all it's battlefield, second of all it's battlefield, so end of story console fools. And if they do the micro transactions correctly there shouldn't be a compromise for balance.

Only 32 players? Then I'd rather just play BF2 instead...

Yeah, balance will go out the window when micro-transactions come into it. Pass.

Looks good but with micro-transactions there will probably be stuff like "this slightly above average assault rifle is all yours for a whole month for only 5 dollars!" and that's definitely not stuff I want to deal with when i mostly play on console and will have Black Ops or even BF:BC2 I could play on PC.

Oh, wait. just read that it's using the BF:Heroes engine (ie. version 4 of the PC Battlefield games engine). I'd still play it though.

This just looks great. I'm still not clear about what it is exactly. BF2 on Frostbite engine? If so, the F**K YEAH!

@enragedTortoise1 because Battlefield is a PC style of a game, and they want their PC fans to know that they always come first
  • MyNameIsMyName - November 6, 2010 1:11 a.m.

    All right more battlefield.
  • EnragedTortoise1 - November 6, 2010 12:43 a.m.
