Castlevania clone gives fans what Konami won't

Shares

Castlevania Lords of Shadow wasn't a bad game, but it still left some fans hankering for some oldschool 2D Dracula-killing action. And while the Xbox LIVE Castlevania Harmony of Despair delivered this to some degree, its re-purposed art assets fell well below the HD levels promised by the game's titular acronym.

Enter Komajou Densetsu II. It's a fan game. It's a shameless clone. And it looks awesome. KDII isn't all HD either, but the fan-made Castlevania title looks like it just may please fans more than any true Castlevania game in recent memory.

Above: Gameplay footage of Komajou Densetsu II (aka Touhouvania II)

Recently revealed at the Japanese manga convention Comiket, a demo version of  KDII is available on the game's official site. It's in Japanese, but it shouldn't be too hard to figure out which menu option does what. If you like what you see, the game is available through mail order, and a downloadable version is on the way.

@Jayzilla: Saying Game X may be more enjoyable than Game Y does not mean there is anything wrong with Game Y.

"it just may please fans more than any true Castlevania game in recent memory" What the hell was rong with portrait of ruin or order of ecclesia? Both were amazing games and weren't released incredibly long ago. This looks fun and all but I'll wait for the inevitable 3DS that's in the works.

The most interesting point by this game is, that it is voiced by professional voice actors, who are quite the big deal in Japan. I played it and it is very, very short, but well done given that it is fan-made. I´m interested if Frontier Aya will make another game like this.

Yeah, I always viewed Koumajou Densetsu as a game geared more towards Touhou fans then castlevania fans.

@AxiamWolfe It´s a fanon game based in the touhou world after all. Played the first koumajou densetsu and liked it, so might as well give this one a try too.

At first I was like "TOUHOUvania? Naw, can't be. I don't see 東方 in the title anywhere!" Then I watched the video. Slashing zombies, skeletons and whatnot. From 0:21 onwards - "Wait, WTF. Aren't those FAIRES? Faires shooting psuedo danmaku (Bullet Hell) at that." Then I noticed some things about the playable character: White haired, Mass knife throwing, Ability to stop time. Now which (Touhou) character do I know that fits that description perfectly...... 3:58 - That's where the case was closed. Dialog windows reveal all. Their names are Sakuya (player character), Hong Meiling (girl behind you in green) and Chen (the cat girl, aka level boss). Seeing Chen's "Spellcard" attack (Pentagram Flight) just made my grin even wider. Anyone who understood my ramblings, kudos to you. Well, anyone? @Noisybear Regarding the "boss' random pattern", it's not random at all if you know how to look at it.

That look pretty decent, although the camera is centered fat too low. Its a nice touch being able to move after you get hit tho. Theyve nailed the physics.

    It looks really awesome!

Ok it's look beautiful... but it also looks soooooo boring. The level design is boring (one enemy then i take the stairs...). the big knight that is following the main character is threatless. And what about the boss' random pattern ?! No logic at all... It's far from being Castlevania... but ok for a fan made game is really beautiful !

This is pretty tight for a doujin game.
  • GamesRadarBrettElston - January 4, 2011 11:39 p.m.

Rebirth was a remake of Castlevania Adventure, which is far shorter and totally straightforward, and not nearly as well animated as this. I'd be all over this in a second should Konami decide to actually bother making a real XBLA/PSN Castlevania.
  • Nintendophile - January 4, 2011 11:38 p.m.

Looking at it from the point of view that it's not a "professional" title, it looks freaking amazing!
  • oneshotfinch - January 4, 2011 11:35 p.m.

Castlevania Rebirth pretty much does this.
