E3 2011: Minecraft port coming exclusively to 360

Shares

Just announced exclusively for the Xbox 360 is a port of PC/Mac indie darling Minecraft, complete with Kinect functionality. No details or demos were given on how Kinect controls will work, but we do know the ambiguous release date is sometime this winter.

Game creator Markus "Notch" Persson confirmed that the game won't be a straight port of the PC version, and that the task of porting it will be handled by an as of yet unnamed studio. No word on if this version of Minecraft will be the final complete game or if we'll continue to play the perpetually-in-Beta version. No info yet on price points, server details and just how much money was in the dump truck that backed into Notch's driveway for this deal. Check back for more info.

Mojang said it's not going to be a straight port and that a different dev is working on it. Also it's awesome to see the pop culture of internet videos of people hacking the Kinect to play Minecraft actually make it to the corporate offices and go from idea to game.

From what I understand, you do not need a kinect to play (Notch stated on his Twitter that you can play with a controller as well), but you will need to pay for it, even you have the PC version. But honestly, I would pay for it again with absolutely 0 complaints. Such an awesome game that has been worth the ~$20 I paid for it and much, much more. I have no problem giving Notch my money. :)

@Vexer exclusive PORT, not exclusive to the 360. That means it will never be on Wii or PS3.

its says kinect functionality so i guess its optional. I love minecraft like a lot of people so im psyched for it and will happily pay for it (within reason). The only questions i have are related to mods, i hope that they can integrate certain mods ie flymod, too many items and single player commands in either directly or as "cheats" or possibly a free-build mode as personally i prefer building lots of random stuff rather than the more traditional exploration/survival method of play.

Kinect owners everywhere will soon be punching trees and waving their arms while running away from a creeper.

Would prefer a port to the 3DS, but whatever works for you Mojang.

I was a little hesitant with this one, and this might not be a allowed as it' s a picture, but I immediatly thought "screw 360 for minecraft when you can have this!" http://i[dot]imgur[dot]com/pvXeO.jpg

"[...] just how much money was in the dump truck that backed into Notch's driveway for this deal. " Best line I've heard during all of E3.

What if you already have it on PC? Will it be free? I won't pay again for it....for the first week at least.

wooo! i'll still play this on the computer...

I'm interested to see how they're going to make this port into a "game", (if they decide to). I've loved just tooling around Minecraft exploring, but some set of defined goals, optional or otherwise, would definitely bring it up a notch.

How can it be exclusively on the Xbox 360 if it's already on the PC?
