Fallout Shelter dethrones top-grossing app Candy Crush Saga
Longtime App Store sales champ Candy Crush Saga was surpassed today by Bethesda's Fallout Shelter, a Fallout-themed mobile game that premiered earlier this week.
Candy Crush Saga previously held a comfortable third place in the App Store's Top Grossing Apps chart, ranking behind current champions Clash of Clans and Game of War: Fire Age. Given the long-term popularity of all three games, it's unusual for a newcomer to take over one of the top chart spots as quickly as Fallout Shelter did.
The Top Grossing Apps section of the App Store features the current leading apps in terms of revenue intake, effectively tracking customer purchases in real time. Though Fallout Shelter is available as a free download, players can purchase optional in-game perks using real cash, driving its quick rise in the App Store's rankings. Fallout Shelter also takes top honors in Apple's Top Free Apps chart, earning more downloads over the last 24 hours than popular apps like Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram.
