Final Fantasy III is heading to the iPhone in Japan this March. Square Enix recently revealed the game via a new teaser site. The site looks like it’s ready to be updated at a steady pace as the game’s upcoming launch approaches.
It's not clear what version of the game will appear on the iOS. Previously, Square Enix used the PSP ports of Final Fantasy I and II as the basis for the respective iPhone versions. Since there is no FFIII for the PSP, the 2006 DS version is the most likely candidate. If that's the case, an English release could come fairly quickly, as the company could simply use the old translation.
However, Square has been known to translate titles multiple times. Final Fantasy IV, for example, received three different translations from three different localization teams since its initial release on the SNES. While the initial SNES translation was awful according to some purists, the GBA FFIV had a fine English script. Despite this, Square had an internal translator take the game on again when it was remade for the DS.
