Final Fantasy XIV beta postponed due to 'critical bugs'

This morning we began downloading the client and patches in preparation for tonight’s open beta test of Final Fantasy XIV. We waited, and waited, andafter waiting on one of the smaller patches for over three hours, we finally figured out the problem: the Final Fantasy XIV open beta test has been indefinitely postponed. Balls.

Above: This can’t possibly tide you over until the beta starts to happen, but it sure is nice to look at.

From the official website:

”FINAL FANTASY XIV Open Beta Test, which is scheduled to begin at 19:00 (PDT) on Aug. 31, 2010, will be postponed due to a confirmation of critical bugs. New schedule will be released at a later date.

"Along with the postponement of FINAL FANTASY XIV Open Beta Test, the issuing of registration code for FINAL FANTASY XIV Open Beta Test will be postponed as well. With the download of client software's installer, it will be suspended at 19:00 (PDT) on Aug. 31, 2010.

"We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”

Above: Damn this blast shield, I can't see anything... this beta happenin' or what? Hello?

Critical bugs? This gameis supposed to ship in only three scant weeks. One can’t help but wonder if the PC versionis just a big, elaborate beta test for the eventual PlayStation 3 version, due out next March.

And to think - we were all ready to thank Square Enix for all the time we planned to waste on the Final Fantasy XIV beta. It seems the joke is on us.
