Own a piece of WoW history for a good cause

World of Warcraft’s virtual auction house may be the place to be to buy your next sword, but Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. is now giving you the option to own a piece of history--a retired HP server blade. This morning, the World of Warcraft developer announced a series of charity auctions where these self-contained servers can be purchased and net proceeds will go to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

You’ll have a chance to bid on one of 2,000 original HP BladeSystem servers that used to house roughly 500 different WoW realms across North America and Europe. Each blade will be contained in a custom windowed case featuring the game’s logo and it comes with a commemorative plaque signed by the WoW development team.

"World of Warcraft realms are like the virtual neighborhoods of the game’s community -- they contain the spaces where millions of players have made friendships, forged friendly rivalries, and created lasting memories,"said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "Each winner in this auction will own a small monument to those collective experiences. The best part is that this auction benefits a great charity doing tremendous work in helping children from the U.S. and around the world."

The charity auction will be held over the course of four weeks on eBay and will begin on October 17. For more information on what realms you can bid on, you can learn more at Blizzard’s website.
