Rage story dissected in "The Dawn" developer diary

Stop us if you've heard this one before: an apocalyptic event forces humanity to seek refuge underground. You emerge from your vault-like shelter some time later only to discover what's left of the ravaged Earth has been be claimed by competing clans of bandits, raiders, thieves and mutants. Oh, and you're special – as in “key to humanity's survival” special. Still not ringing a bell? We bet you a few bottle caps you'll find the story behind id Software's upcoming Rage somewhat familiar after watching this latest developers' diary (and a few more caps thatyou'll be too intrigued to care).

Similarities to Fallout (and to a lesser degree, Borderlands) aside, Rage looks pretty interesting and... well... just damn pretty. It's evident id Software is making full use of the its new id Tech 5 engine, and that it isn't intent on simply riding on the coattails of previous post-apocalyptic fare.

We'll find out how well Rage plays out when it releases for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 on October 4th in North America, and October 7th in the UK.
