Square Enix stock drops after Dragon Quest X reveal, online RPG may charge monthly fees

Shortly after yesterday's annoucement that Dragon Quest X will be coming to Wii and Wii U, the next round of news hit: DQX is likely to have a monthly usage fee. A spec sheet found on the new Dragon Quest portal site site lists both “price” and “usage fee” as TBA, according to Andriasang's translation.

While Square Enix stressed that the game will be playable offline, to what extent that's true is still unknown. DQX will have online item trading, party-based questing, and other MMO-like features, but investors may be skeptical of the new online capabilities, since Square Enix stock fell ten percent between yesterday and today. If DQX does require a monthly usage fee, it's hard to imagine the online portion not having a substantial amount of content to justify that price.

However, there's still plenty of time for the game to change before it's released. The same Dragon Quest portal site says the Wii version is expected in 2012 and the Wii U is still TBA. For now, our opinion of the game is also TBA, but we'll let you know as more information becomes available.
