Valve's first Counter-Strike: Global Offensive trailer reveals cross-platform play

Shares

Valve packed along a preview of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive with it for this weekend's Pax Prime in Washington, but for all those relegated to watching the big show at home, it's also released its stat-filled teaser trailer on the net. Fast-forward past the self-congratulatory bits for a peak at the new cross-platform multiplayer features coming in the 2012 downloadable sequel.

Valve announced Counter-Strike: Global Offensive earlier this month, and is teaming up with its Counter-Strike: Source co-horts at Hidden Path Entertainment for its development. As indicated in the video, the new game will sport better visuals, more weapon variety, expanded online modes and the ability to share games between all available consoles and computers.

"For the past 12 years, it has continued to be one of the most-played games in the world, headlining competitive gaming tournaments and selling over 25 million units worldwide across the franchise. CS: GO promises to expand on CS' award-winning gameplay and deliver it to gamers on the PC as well as the next gen consoles and the Mac," said Doug Lombard, VP of Marketing at Valve.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is scheduled to deploy on PSN, XBLA, and (of course) Steam early next year.

It looks like the same ol' CS except with updated graphics and more maps.

looks sweet, happy to see that Valve is sticking to that Cross-Platform Play stuff, I didn't want to see it go to waste.

if its true that it'll be cross-platform between all systems, then i'd love to face off against 360 players. maybe we'll finally settle this ridiculous console war. also, i wanna see how badly my ass will be beaten if i face off against PC players. ive worked alongside them in Portal 2, time to go against them. I'm actually trying to get into PC gaming too. maybe i'll get it for steam and PS3

Shadowrun on the 360 tried cross-platform play (PC/360) and it didn't go too well for 360 players... Ever. Mouse/Keyboard>gamepad every time. I can't remember if it was Shadowrun or some other cross-platform FPS that actually hanicapped PC users to try to level the playing field. That didn't work either in the long run.

Finally I can get destroyed on my own console! I've been playing Counter Strike Source for a year now, haven't gotten any better and get thrashed every time I play. Can't wait to play it on consoles against pc players! Seriously though I wanna see how much of a difference there is Controller/Mouse I am a controller player so I figure I should at least do slightly better.

From my understanding (or is it just plain hope) this is going to be CS 1.6 + source re-skinning + tweaks.

Ooops, sorry about the quadruple post, still unused to commenting.

Cross-platform play... I wonder how many console players will dare to go up against PC veterans who have been playing CS for years. Regardless of the difference controls, it's difficult to compete effectively against those who have maps like Office and Dust imprinted in their brain. Should be a heck of a lot of fun though!

They would be foolish to try.

    EXCITE!

Wow, if console players dare to join PC servers, they're going to finally learn why the mouse is superior. And it will be a painful lesson.
  • HumorTumor - August 26, 2011 7:20 p.m.

I do agree that the mouse is more precise. But I just prefer the feel of a controller over it, hence why I haven't really taken to PC gaming, there just isn't much reason for me to.

Oh, yeah, christ no. I just want to play PS3 players.

Doung Lombard? Who the heck is that?
  • veryweirdguy - August 26, 2011 1:53 p.m.

Cross platform as in 360 players can play against PS3 players? If so, that is awesome, but I fear for the fanboys who will inevitably get locked in flame wars mid match. I played some Portal 2 cross platform and it worked great, I really hope it is the future.

    No, PS3 to PC/MAC. No 360.
  • veryweirdguy - August 26, 2011 2:02 p.m.

That's a shame. Oh well, PS3 it is for me then!
