What was your favorite game this year? - Ask GamesRadar

Shares

We're rapidly coming to the end of the year, which can only mean one thing: the much disputed Game of the Year awards. But there's a distinct difference between the GOTY pick that the staff all agrees on, and our personal favorite games. Without giving away the GamesRadar pick for Game of the Year, these are the 2013 games that each GR editor holds closest to their heart.

RadarReplies Question: What is your favorite character of this console generation?

Easy, that was Fire Emblem: Awakening, which also doubled as best strategy and RPG. I also liked Super Mario 3D World (best platforming), Metro: Last Light (best shooter), and Civilization V: Brave New World (best DLC). That said, of the main releases, I haven't played yet Tomb Raider and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds.

I would also include The Last of Us (best story and acting).

Based on play time, Harmoknight. Based on impressions, Resident Evil Revelations HD. Based on challenge, The Wonderful 101. Based on platforming, Super Mario 3D World. Based on scope, GTA: V Most unique experience, Attack of the Friday Monsters Games I hate this year: Dead Space 3, Bioshock Infinite (the gameplay), Mario and Luigi: Dream Team, Game and Wario. Also the hype of the Last of Us.

Question: Is GR planning on some ever-awesome Anti-Awards this year?

My GOTY easily goes to Fire Emblem: Awakening. I dropped way too many hours in multiple playthroughs.

What is it with Americans pronouncing Lara Croft as "Laura" Croft. I'm beginning to suspect they do it just to annoy British folk like myself. My personal GotY has got to be Velocity Ultra on PSVita. I'm not normally interested in shmup type games but this one really surprised me. It speaks volumes that I was willing to complete the game twice due to a trophy glitch on my first playthrough preventing me from obtaining the platinum. No mean feat considering the difficulty of some later levels. Kickass soundtrack too! I can only thank playstation plus for bringing the game to my attention as I probably wouldn't have played it otherwise. Bring on the sequel Futurlab!

My GOTY might be Fire Emblem: Awakening, tied maybe with Pokemon Y (although I haven't finished Pokemon yet). Very close runners up would be The Last of Us and Tomb Raider.

    ACIV

I'm realizing now that almost every big game I've played this year and loved was a 2012 release. I'll have to go with Pokemon X. GTA5 was great and all, but there were too many low points for me too call it a favorite, whereas I enjoyed the new Pokemon all the way through. Besides, my Shiny Dragonite beats all.

From what I've played I'm inclined to say Bioshock, with Gone Home as a close second.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf defined my summer.

Ni no Kuni, as a fan of JRPGs, it worked magic on me, returning me to a time long past in whence the world seemed like nothing but a fantasy.

Pikmin 3, Bioshock Infinite, Super Mario 3D World.

They must have recorded this earlier since Lucas still had his hair. I would go with Lucas despite his behavior and hair cut. Anyway my favorite game of this year is Injustice Gods Among Us because I love fighting games and it's the first DC game to settle the burning questions like who is stronger Batman or Superman? Also where did Greg get that mustache on a stick from?

The Last of Us. I was more hyped for Bioshock : Infinite because I've always felt like Bioshock was this generation's best franchise. However, The Last of Us has taken its rightful place as one of the best games of all-time, now to be mentioned in the same breath as Ocarina of Time and Metroid Prime (my personal two greatest games ever). It has to be said that I didn't play Link between Worlds just yet, and judging by my crazy love of the Zelda series, anything could happen. But hell, The Last of Us is insanely awesome.

I haven't gotten to play a lot of new games this year, due to having fewer funds for such than anytime since I joined the current(last?) gen, and most of the games that were new this year all fell short in some way that make me not want to claim it. I guess it's Pokemon X/Y, since that's the only new game of this year that I actually completed without having some reservation about it.

I'm going to have to say Shin Megami Tensei IV. For not this was not a game I decided to buy way in advance like Pokemon, but a game I picked out purely by interest. But it was a great game, filled with grinding demons, moral ambiguity, and all around Japanese styled oddities. What a game.

In the past I've always made a bit of a list of my favourite games but this year there's just no competition, my game of the year is the last of us. After playing the last of us I couldn't even touch another game for a couple of months.
