2004 Olympics sprint on to PS2
If you've always fancied a go at some virtual gymnastics, now's your chance
It's been a fair old while since we last saw an athletics game, so we're intrigued by today's announcement by Sony that they plan to release a PS2 title based on this year's Olympics called, obviously enough, Athens 2004.
Due for release in July, the game features seven venues - the Olympic Stadium for athletics, the Markopoulo Olympic Shooting Centre, the Olympic Aquatic Centre, the Nikaia Olympic Weightlifting Hall, the Olympic Indoor Hall for gymnastics, the Markopoulo Olympic Equestrian Centre and the historic Panathinaiko Stadium for archery.
There's a huge range of events on offer, including four different swimming events, track and field competitions, the decathlon and heptathlon, gymnastics, archery, shooting, weightlifting and even show jumping.
While events like archery and shooting will be fairly obvious from a gameplay point of view, it'll be interesting to see how developers Eurocom decide to tackle pursuits such as the track events. Let's hope it doesn't just degenerate into Daley Thompson's Decathlon-style button bashing.
Athens 2004 will be released for PS2 in July
