50 Greatest Ensemble Casts

Ocean's 11 (2001)

The Cast: George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts, Andy Garcia, Carl Reiner, Don Cheadle, Elliott Gould, Bernie Mac, Casey Affleck, Scott Caan.

Pause The Screen When: The post-heist scene in which the whole crew line up in front of the Bellagio fountain display. Marvellous stuff.

Stand-Out Star: This is definitely Clooney's movie, with gorgeous George gliding from scene to scene like Cary Grant reincarnated.

True Romance (1993)

The Cast: Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette, Gary Oldman, James Gandolfini, Dennis Hopper, Christopher Walken, Val Kilmer, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Rapaport, Chris Penn, Tom Sizemore, Brad Pitt, Bronson Pinchot.

Pause The Screen When: The climactic hotel-room shootout contains a fair old whack of the film's stars, although of course, several of them have snuffed it by this point.

Stand-Out Star: A dead heat between Walken and Hopper, who share what is unquestionably the film's most spine-tingling scene.

The Magnificent Seven (1960)

The Cast: Yul Brynner, Eli Wallach, Charles Bronson, Steve McQueen, Robert Vaughn, James Coburn, Brad Dexter, Horst Buchholtz.

Pause The Screen When:
Our posse of grizzled gunslingers line up in formation on several occasions, giving us plenty of time to be dazzled by their overwhelming manliness.

Stand-Out Star:
Coburn gets the plum role, as the icy-cold knife-thrower with an unwavering arm.

Pulp Fiction (1994)

The Cast: John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, Uma Thurman, Ving Rhames, Christopher Walken, Tim Roth, Harvey Keitel, Rosanna Arquette, Eric Stoltz, Amanda Plummer.

Pause The Screen When: The immediate aftermath of Butch's post-fight bunk probably contains the most stars, with Travolta, Jackson, Thurman and Rhames all in attendance.

Stand-Out Star: It's so difficult to single one of them out for particular praise, but we'll give Travolta the nod, for what is unquestionably the performance (and role) of his career.

George Wales

George was once GamesRadar's resident movie news person, based out of London. He understands that all men must die, but he'd rather not think about it. But now he's working at Stylist Magazine.
