50 Greatest Movie Sisters
Doing it for themselves
Jurassic Park (1993)
The Sister: Lex is a bit of a 'fraidy cat when it comes to dinosaurs (with good reason!), but its her computer-hacking skills and calm under pressure that save her brother Tim from becoming raptor food.
Sibling Rivalry: Tim gives her a fair bit of stick, calling her a geek and a wimp on various occasions, but the two of them are pretty close, really. Even cranky old Dr. Grant has his heart warmed by them!
Pride And Prejudice (2005)
The Sister: Elizabeth Bennet, who loves all her sisters, but is particularly close with Jane. Not only is she a reliable shoulder to cry on, but she also manages to engineer things so that Jane's wavering lover gets over himself and puts a ring on it. Well done that girl!
Sibling Rivalry: Not a bit of it! These two are as thick as thieves, and even end up marrying a pair of best friends. Beat that!
Cruel Intentions (1999)
The Sister: A coke-snorting bitch of the highest order, Kathryn Merteuil is queen bee at her high school and a master manipulator of those around her, egging on step-brother Sebastian to ruin a young virgin's life, simply because she can. Miaow!
Sibling Rivalry: Being that they're step-siblings, the sexual tension that exists between Kathryn and Sebastian isn't as creepy as it could be, but it's not exactly normal. They're not over-keen on each other's family either. "How is your gold-digging, whore of a mother enjoying Bali?" enquires Sebastian. "She suspects your impotent, alcoholic father is diddling the maid," comes the reply.
The Fighter (2010)
The Sister: Rather than singling one of them out, we're recognising the entire clan of hair-pulling, chain-smoking harpies that Micky Ward can call "sister". When they're on the warpath, God help anyone who feels their wrath…
Sibling Rivalry: Most of the sibling rivalry comes between Micky and his brother, but the girls don't make his life particularly easy either, especially when they take against his new girlfriend.
Chinatown (1974)
The Sister: Evelyn Mulwray is harbouring a terrible secret about her daughter Katherine, one that she has managed to keep secret from the younger woman, despite the incredible toll its taken on her own state of mind. "She's my sister and my daughter," comes the tortured revelation at the film's grand finale.
Sibling Rivalry: There's not much sibling rivalry on show here, largely because one half of the equation doesn't know she even has a sister!
Donnie Darko (2001)
The Sister: Elizabeth Darko, Donnie's sarky older sibling. A high flyer, she's accepted to Harvard, much to her parents' delight and her little brother's chagrin. Still, she lets him come to her celebration party, which is something.
Sibling Rivalry: They do enjoy a good bicker. "Did you just call me a fuck-ass?" laughs Elizabeth over dinner. "Well you can go suck a fuck!" Lovely.
The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)
The Sister: Margot Tenenbaum, a troubled young woman who started smoking at the age of twelve, ran away from school at fourteen and embarked upon her first failed marriage at nineteen. Never a dull moment…
Sibling Rivalry: Her off-kilter relationship with brother Richie is troubling, not least because he's head over heels in love with her. It's a bit awkward, really…

The Hunger Games (2012)
The Sister: Katniss Everdeen, who makes the ultimate sacrifice by nominating herself as Tribute in order that her sister be spared. From there on in, all she can think about is winning the contest so the two can be reunited once more.
Sibling Rivalry: Nope. Understandably, given the stakes at play here!
Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)
The Sister: Jeannie Bueller, Ferris's older sister who, despite resenting his give-a-shit attitude, still bails him out of trouble when Ed Rooney catches him playing truant. Way to go, sis!
Sibling Rivalry: Jeannie is perennially outraged at Ferris' ability to give authority the finger without a second thought. That said, she lightens up a bit after meeting Charlie Sheen's handsome drug addict…
Star Wars (1977)
The Sister: Princess Leia, sister of Luke Skywalker. Not that either of them know it, which makes it a teensy bit awkward when they share a steamy kiss. Gross...
Sibling Rivalry: They go in for a fair bit of bickering, but in more of a flirtatious fashion than you'd expect from your average pair of siblings. To be fair to them, they pack it in fairly swiftly once the truth emerges…
