Director Erik Poppe’s worthy intentions are nearly undone by an undisciplined screenplay. Still, he marshals two strong performances: Binoche’s subtlety in unpacking her character’s complexity is no surprise, but newcomer Lauryn Canny, as Rebecca’s daughter, matches her co-star’s every beat.
