Abobo's Big Adventure is an orgy of retro goodness
Double Dragon villain stars in one of the best Flash games we've played in ages
There’s no shortage of nostalgia baiting Flash games on Newgrounds, but when someone does it right it’s hard to suppress a grin. Abobo’s Big Adventure is one of those games. Created by Team Bobo, the game plucks sprites and music from dozens if not hundreds of NES classics (Mega Man, Metroid) and not so classics (Karnov, Urban Champion).
Big Adventure finds Abobo trying to reclaim his kidnapped son Aboboy, tearing through a collection of side scrolling, top down and other various levels, replacing the sprites of regular goons with River City Ransom characters, the spies from Spy vs. Spy, Donkey Kong and many more. Spoiler alert: Abobo beats the snot out of all of them. Each level changes it up, poking loving fun at a variety of games and tropes, all with some gory humor tossed in to spice things up.
Anyone that grew up with an NES, or even an NES emulator, will likely have a blast with Abobo’s Big Adventure. The controls are good, the animation is slick and the game really feels like a project that’s had a massive amount of time invested in it. Free Flash games are rarely this good, so make sure to give this one a whirl.
