All playable Smash Bros. characters to get amiibo - including Ryu
Oh dear. It looks like Nintendo is doing everything in its power to get anyone with a passing interest in video games to hop on the amiibo train. Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai confirmed in today's Nintendo Direct that every single playable Smash Bros. character is going to get an amiibo - and that includes newcomers like Street Fighter's Ryu.
During the direct, Sakurai mentioned that the next wave of amiibo would include the likes of R.O.B., Duck Hunt, Falco, and Game & Watch (complete with changeable poses - ahhhhhhhh why are they doing this to me). Even the Mii Fighters are getting amiibo, with individual figures for Mii Brawler, Mii Gunner, and Mii Swordfighter. These amiibo will be available in September, alongside Zero Suit Samus, Ganondorf, Dr. Mario, Captain Olimar, and Bowser Jr.
And while there isn't a solid release date, Sakurai did confirm that DLC characters like Mewtwo, Lucas, Roy, and Ryu will get their own amiibo sometime in the future. So yeah, get your wallets ready and prepare to F5 your favorite online marketplace for eventual pre-order opportunities.
When it comes to amiibo, I feel a lot like Michael Corleone in The Godfather Part 3: "Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in." If Nintendo can ensure a steady stock of these plastic toys (without forcing us to jump through hoops just to find them), it might be enough to get me to reverse my amiibo moratorium. Between Chibi-Robo and Game and Watch, my will is being tested to the limits.
