Anthony Mackie talks Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Flushed with the staggering success of The Avengers , Marvel will go into its Phase 2 sequence of films brimming with confidence, and ready to introduce a few new characters into the mix from its huge roster of talent.

One of those characters will be the Falcon, Anthony Mackie’s character in Captain America: The Winter Soldier , and the star has taken time out to explain what an honour it is to play Marvel’s first African-American superhero.

“I'm playing the Falcon,” he told Comingsoon.net . “He's this guy in Harlem who moved to California and became a drug dealer. His plane crashed, and he was genetically altered, and he can fly, has telepathic powers.”

“He's the first African-American superhero,” he continued. “It makes me feel all the work I've done has been paying off. I have a son, nephews and nieces, and I love the idea that they can dress up as the Falcon on Halloween. They now have someone they can idolize. That's a huge honour for me.”

No word as yet on how the Falcon will be used in the sequel, although we’d imagine he’ll be working in tandem with Cap to take down the revived Bucky Barnes, the “Winter Soldier” of the title. The film opens in the UK on 4 April 2014.
