One of the major talking points of the first trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, has been the look of the new lightsaber clutched by the villainous Kylo Ren in the new footage.
J.J. Abrams thought long and hard about the design aesthetic of the new weapon, consulting with Apple designer Jony Ive, the man responsible for the design of the iPhone and iPad, on how it should look.
Ive has been discussing said aesthetic with The New Yorker, and while noting that he didn’t come up with the idea of the cross blades, he does have a couple of interesting insights into the new look.
“It would be interesting it if were less precise and just a little bit more spitty,” noted Ive, before advising Abrams to make his new lightsaber, “more analog and more primitive and I think in that way, somehow more ominous.”
It was an inventive move on Abrams’ part to seek out Ive’s opinion, and while there has been some grumbling about that cross-blade, it certainly seems as though the two have settled upon an eye-catching new design.
Directed by Abrams and co-starring Adam Driver, John Boyega and Daisy Ridley, Star Wars: The Force Awakens will open in the UK and US on 18 December 2015.
