Atonement wins at the BAFTAs
And This Is England gets Best British movie...
Last night, the British Academy Film Awards were handed out and there were few surprises to be had from among the winners.
Atonement scored an expected Best Picture win, beating out No Country For Old Men, There Will Be Blood The Lives Of Others and American Gangster.
But Shane Meadows’ This Is England snatched the Best British Film from the jaws of the romantic epic while, elsewhere, the winners were spread among films which have been winning big this awards season. So No Country grabbed director for the Coens, Juno got the screenplay award and the acting gongs went to Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard, with Javier Bardem and Tilda Swinton in the Supporting Actor categories.
