A smirking sponge on legs takes his best mate - a purple starfish called Patrick - on a treacherous quest to recover the crown of King Neptune, before the enraged monarch turns SpongeBob's boss, Mr Krab, into shellfish pâte. It's all a fit-up cooked up by a ranting globule of pond-scum called Plankton, who is jealous of Mr Krab's `krab patty' - a sort of submarinal Big Mac that far outsells the slops of seaweed he hawks at his outlet.

Mostly, Spongebob Squarepants is happy just to thunder along as an expanded retread of the TV cartoon and although the shouty anarchy feels like a good idea at the time, it's not something you'd want to watch again. Although younger family members may have other ideas.
