Barbarella's back in development
Dino De Laurentiis is trying to get the remake made
The remake of Barbarella is something that has drifting in the zero gravity limbo of Hollywood development hell for years. In fact, it’s been taking so long on its voyage to the screen that we’d given up on the idea back when Drew Barrymore was considering the lead.
But now Dino and Martha De Laurentiis have snagged the rights to the original French comic book series on which the 1968 movie was based.
That said, the producing team plans a fresh take on the character, and have hired Casino Royale co-writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade to craft a new version. "Barbarella is the ultimate science-fiction adventure heroine: smart, strong funny and sexy," De Laurentiis said. "I'm excited to reintroduce Barbarella to a new generation of moviegoers."
Purvis and Wade are charged with – grit your teeth – “re-imagining” Barbarella as a modern woman who survives her futuristic world with sex appeal, fighting skills and brains.
There’s no word on who will be starring or directing, and the film doesn’t even have a distributor yet. So if you were planning to cross all your fingers, wait a while – it makes everyday tasks really difficult.
