Batman: Year One adaptation gets a voice cast

Frank Miller's classic comic Batman: Year One is being turned into an animated movie, and The Hollywood Reporter has details of the voice cast, as well as a couple of exclusive images.

Bryan Cranston ( Breaking Bad ) will provide the voice of Jim Gordon, with Ben McKenzie ( The OC ) playing Bruce Wayne/Batman.

Eliza Dushku will lend her purr to Catwoman, and Battlestar Galactica 's Katee Sackhoff is Gordon's colleague (and lust object) Sarah Essen.

The adaptation will be a straight-to-DVD original, though it will have its premiere at Comic-Con this July.

Miller's origin story is one of the best-known Batman comics. It was almost adapted into a live-action movie by Darren Aronofsky several years ago, and small nods to it can be seen in Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins .

As Bruce Wayne is establishing himself as a masked crimefighter, he joins forces with Lieutenant Gordon, who plays a pivotal role in the story.

Executive producer Bruce Timm (of the superlative Batman: The Animated Series and more) told THR: "The source material is surprisingly cinematic; it's a pretty straight forward literal retelling.

"[David] Mazzucchelli's artwork is beautifully composed and we were able to refer to the comic for about 80 percent of the camera setups."

Batman: Year One is expected to have a home video release this autumn.
