Ben Kingsley on The Mandarin
Exclusive: “I didn’t have a template to copy”
In issue 205 of Total Film magazine , we size up Iron Man 3 ’s big bad, The Mandarin.
You can read the full piece inside the jam-packed Heroes And Villains issue (available for just £1.99 on your iPad ), but here’s a snippet of what Sir Ben Kingsley had to say about Tony Stark’s arch-nemesis:
On avoiding Fu Manchu-style racial stereotypes, he told us, “I didn’t have any template to copy.
“I’m undereducated as far as Marvel comics are concerned, and that can be a good thing, like coming to a Shakespeare play fresh rather than having done it 20 times.”
Don’t expect a focus on The Mandarin’s 10 rings and the dark magic they unleash. Do expect a human portrayal of evil, on a grand scale. “He released demonic layers in me!”, admitted Sir Ben.
Iron Man 3 opens in the UK on 25 April 2013.
