Samuel L Jackson and Josh Hartnett sign up for Rod Lurie’s new fight drama
Samuel L Jackson strapping on boxing gloves and tackling the sweet science. Sound intriguing? There’s more. Josh Hartnett is co-starring and Rod Lurie (The Last Castle, The Contender) will direct Resurrecting The Champ, the story of a cub reporter who discovers that a local homeless man may be a former boxing champion. He develops a relationship with the man (Jackson) and tries to get him a return to former glories. But things don’t quite go to plan when the reporter discovers that his “champion” isn’t quite the man he thought he was.
The plot is based on a series of articles by Los Angeles Times writer JR Moehringer and Lurie has been fighting to get this assignment for a long time. He pitched to write the script before he even directed The Contender. Back then, Allison Burnett got the job, but now Lurie has the last laugh - he’s re-writing the script ready to direct it. "The article made me cry and this is a wonderful story of fathers and sons and the honesty between them," Lurie blabbed to Variety.
