Nice work if you can get it
Sub Quest 12 – Vampire Asterisk
Availability: Chapter 4
I would highly recommend getting this asterisk before the close of chapter 4 as the Vampire’s unique Genome Drain ability lets you learn an enemy’s attack (on the proviso that you survive, which isn’t difficult) and as the monsters in the world reset after the end of chapter 4, you’ll miss out on picking up a number of Genome abilities.
When you arrive at Vampire Castle, you’ll find the doors locked and discover that you need to locate 6 keystones to open them. You’ll have probably twigged by now that those strange stone monoliths that you couldn’t interact with prior to this event have something to do with obtaining aforementioned keystones so make a beeline for each one to encounter a dragon that will grant a keystone upon its demise.
All of the dragons will use a combination of a strong physical attack (Bite), an elemental Breath attack with added status effects and use an Eye ability that will conveniently lower your party’s defence against the exact element that dragon is favouring.
To this end, utilising the Spiritmaster’s Enigma ability to nullify all elemental damage taken by all allies for four turns is a must in every battle and be sure to keep casting it. Equipping any accessories or support abilities that negate each dragon’s negative status effects will also make these encounters go a lot smoother. The 6 locations and dragon bosses are as follows:
Monolith in Eisen - east of Starkfort
Boss | HP | Weakness | Item Stolen | Item Dropped |
Salamander | 99,999 | Water | Dragon Fang, Bomb Arm | Phlogiston |
This fire dragon is weak to water and will use Scorching Eye to lower your defence against fire before engulfing you in his Fiery Breath attack, which thankfully has no adverse status effects attached to it.
Monolith on island north of Yulyana Woods
Boss | HP | Weakness | Item Stolen | Item Dropped |
Mizuchi | 99,999 | Lightning | Dragon Fang, Arctic Wind | Permacrystal |
This water dragon uses Icy Breath to inflict stop and Freezing Eye to lower your defence against water.
Monolith in Harena - north of Harena Oasis
Boss | HP | Weakness | Item Stolen | Item Dropped |
Wyvern | 99,999 | Fire | Dragon Fang, Tengu Sneeze | Fairy Wing |
This wind dragon uses Tempest Eye to reduce your defence against its Stormy Breath attack. The good news is that this dragon’s breath attack doesn’t come with any nasty side effects.
Monolith in Eternia - southwest of Southmoor
Boss | HP | Weakness | Item Stolen | Item Dropped |
Ladon | 99,999 | Wind | Dragon Fang, Earth Drum | Desert Rose |
This earth dragon uses Earth Eye to reduce defence against earth attacks and Megaton Press which also causes paralyze.
Monolith in Yulyana - north of Yulyana Woods
Boss | HP | Weakness | Item Stolen | Item Dropped |
Shinryu | 99,999 | Dark | Dragon Fang, Pantheon’s Wrath | Glitterbug |
This light dragon uses Celestial Eye to weaken your party to light attacks, followed up by Holy Breath which will inflict blind on your party as a lovely added bonus.
Monolith in Caldis - east of Lontano Villa
Boss | HP | Weakness | Item Stolen | Item Dropped |
Jabberwock | 99,999 | Light | Dragon Fang | Dark Matter |
This dragon of darkness uses Evil Eye to lower your party’s defence to dark attacks before hitting you with Fearsome Breath, which also causes fear.
After that little tangent, take a well-earned rest at your favourite inn an replenish your supplies as needed before heading back to Vampire Castle in Eternia for an even tougher boss battle. Fight your way through this tricksy dungeon / art gallery to the top floor where you will find the Lord DeRosso, whose admission fee to see the last painting in his fortress is a great big ass-whooping.
Boss | HP | Weakness | Item Stolen | Item Dropped |
Lord DeRosso | 150,000 | Light | Megalixir | Megalixir |
DeRosso’s Battle Thirst ability is another one of those skills that makes you just want to throttle him every time he uses it, because he will drain 1 BP from his target and take it for himself. The Vampire Lord also has two very powerful attacks in the form of Bone Crush and Energy Burst.
However if one of your party members is a Templar continuously using the Rampart ability and you pop a Ninja or two into the mix using Utsusemi and Transience, as well as having a White or Red Mage keeping up everyone’s HP, you should make it through this battle and gain the Vampire Asterisk and a gander at the coveted painting behind his throne.
