Breaking Dawn Pt. 1 dominates the US box office
Racks up fifth best weekend of all time
Lacklustre reviews have clearly done little to diminish the popularity of the Twilight series, as Breaking Dawn Pt. 1 took a staggering $139.5 million from its opening weekend in the US.
The monster haul represents the fifth biggest weekend in box office history and bodes well for the saga’s final episode when it arrives in cinemas next autumn. Nearest competitor Happy Feet 2 was bludgeoned into second place, its $22 million weekend looking meagre by comparison.
Last week’s number one film Immortals slipped down to third place with just $12.25 million, closely followed by Adam Sandler vehicle Jack And Jill with $12 million. Another former chart-topper sits in fifth, Puss In Boots adding a further $10.7 million to its overall haul.
Controversy-stirrer Brett Ratner saw Tower Heist drop to sixth spot with $7 million, while Clint’s J. Edgar continued to underperform with a $5.9 million weekend. Harold And Kumar 3D fared even worse, its $2.9 million takings planting it firmly in eighth spot.
Justin Timberlake’s In Time sits in ninth with $1.675 million, whilst George Clooney’s critically acclaimed The Descendants took $1.2 million from its limited release.
Next week sees The Muppets go head to head with Aardman’s Arthur Christmas and Martin Scorsese’s Hugo . Who will win the battle of Thanksgiving? Tune in next week to find out…
