Chris Pine says there will not be a Jack Ryan sequel

Chris Pine has confirmed that there will be no sequel to Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, and has expressed some regrets regarding how the first film eventually turned out.

The film only managed a $50 million domestic haul, failing even to recoup its $60 million budget, and it seems as though Paramount is unwilling to gamble on improving on that with a second outing.

“No, I don’t think it made enough money for that to happen,” says Pine when asked about a potential sequel by Moviefone. “That’s one of my deep regrets, that we didn’t totally get that right.”

“It’s a great franchise,” he continues, “and if it’s not me then I hope it gets a fifth life at this point. It’s just great. I love the spy genre. I hope it’s done again and with a great story.”

Despite Shadow Recruit’s box-office misfire, we’d be extremely surprised if Jack Ryan wasn’t revived for the big screen at some point down the track. As Bond and Bourne have repeatedly proven, good spies don’t stay gone for long…
