Cruz set to board fourth Pirates film
Yo ho, yo ho, it’s a pirate’s life for her...
With shooting on Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides scheduled to begin in Hawaii this summer, Disney are looking to begin casting the project proper.
Who to replace the departed Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom? How about Penelope Cruz? Heat Vision are reporting that the Spanish beauty could be about to set sail with the project.
Makes sense, considering she’s just worked with the film’s director, Rob Marshall, on musical Nine . Cruz has also tangoed previously with Johnny Depp in Blow , meaning we know she can hold her own against the scene-stealer.
Who will Cruz play? No-one’s talking, but we’re wondering if this could mean that Depp’s rum-guzzling Jack Sparrow will finally be getting a decent love interest. It certainly looks like a match made in pirate heaven (if there is such a place).
Cruz has had something of a quality comeback in the past couple of years, winning an Oscar for her fantastically fiery performance in Vicky Cristina Barcelona and impressing with 2006’s Volver .
Crucially, though, those were both films that permitted her to use her native tongue. Could that be the key to Cruz’s success? If Marshall has any sense, he’ll cast Cruz as a Spanish princess and let her go native on a couple of occasions. While brandishing a sword, of course.
