Daxter

As (surprisingly) capable as he turns out to be, Daxter still dreams of being something more. Lucky for you, the game lets you play out those dreams as entertaining minigames. Only one of these was available in the preview version we played, a rhythm-action parody of The Matrix: Reloaded, with Daxter/Neo beating up 40 identical elf-things as they stepped on button markers. Not startlingly original, but it makes for a short, interesting diversion, and it's mildly funny to watch Daxter grimace meaningfully in wraparound sunglasses and high-collared robes.

Promising PlayStation 2-caliber cinemas, the ability to unlock content when connected with the PS2's Jak X, two-player bug battles and a huge, seamless game world, Daxter feels less like a mascot game and more like a legitimate chapter in the Jak franchise.

After graduating from college in 2000 with a BA in journalism, I worked for five years as a copy editor, page designer and videogame-review columnist at a couple of mid-sized newspapers you've never heard of. My column eventually got me a freelancing gig with GMR magazine, which folded a few months later. I was hired on full-time by GamesRadar in late 2005, and have since been paid actual money to write silly articles about lovable blobs.
