Did Mark Hamill just reveal a major spoiler for Star Wars: Episode 8?
WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Star Wars: The Force Awakens and a potential spoiler for Episode 8...
For the most part, Star Wars: The Force Awakens managed to live up to its considerable hype when it was released back in December. However, there were fans who were frustrated by the amount of unanswered questions we were left with by the end of the film, and Mark Hamill may have hinted at the answer to the biggest question of all.
The Star Wars actor was speaking to fans at the Oxford Union earlier this week, and when asked about working with Daisy Ridley on 2017's Episode 8, Hamill had this to say; "Daisy is incredible. So genuine, appealing, loveable, she beams, she has a wonderful charisma, I adore her. She's my daughter's age - and that's how I relate to her." According to The Sun, the last part of that quote drew audible gasps from the crowd, which prompted Hamill to quickly add "I don’t mean anything by that. As actors that’s how I relate to that."
It's been widely speculated that Luke Skywalker is indeed Rey's father, and if that does turn out to be the case, we hope Luke gets an "I am your father" moment akin to another, very well known scene in the Star Wars franchise. While some may be tempted to take Hamill's quote literally, there's a host of different possibilities as to Rey and Luke's connection. Let's hope the answers are just as "deeply and profoundly satisfying" as Colin Trevorrow suggests.
Directed by Rian Johnson and starring Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Laura Dern, Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, Gwendoline Christie, and Benicio del Toro, Star Wars: Episode VIII opens in cinemas on December 15, 2017.
