Earlier this year, a series of reports indicated that a return trip to the Grid was on the cards. While it wasn’t greenlit by Disney, pre-production on Tron 3 had geared up with a tentative shooting schedule rumored to begin this fall in Vancouver. And now, according to a report from THR the studio has canceled all work on the sequel.
Olivia Wilde and Garrett Hedlund were expected to reprise their roles as Quorra and Sam Flynn respectively with Tron Legacy director Joseph Kosinski back at the helm. Released in 2010, Legacy brought in around $400 million worldwide, further expanding the digital realm first introduced in 1982’s Tron.
If the film hadn’t received the dreaded axe, the third instalment was to explore Quorra, an ass-kicking algorithm, as she ventured into the real world for the first time. The site goes on to mention that Disney were tentatively eyeing Jared Leto for a significant role, with The Wrap suggesting that Olivia Munn was also in consideration.
Disney has yet to comment on the movie’s cancelation, but it’s believed that the studio’s jam-packed slate - that includes the Star Wars and Marvel universes - may have been a deciding factor. Whatever the reason - it’s game over for Tron 3.
