DVDstruction: Gratuitous Gore
5 quality HDs that bring out the best in bloody
Dawn of the Dead 1978 - Blu-ray
Dawn of the Dead 2004 - HD-DVD
The flicks
No matter how fast you like your zombie, both Dawns dish out intestines and arterial spray like no one’s business. Although it moves at a deliberate pace, the original is a masterpiece in satirizing American consumerism while the remake ditches character and sprints straight for the brain matter.
Since Classic Dawn was released Unrated, you’ll see balls-out gore like sloppy entrails, arms being ripped off, exploding heads and necks graphically bitten into. Remake Dawn features no less than a ton of headshots, a baby in the face and a chick getting a chainsaw rammed through her shoulder.
The discs
We recommend both cause while Classic Dawn has terrific effects, the video transfer is a little lackluster, yet still leagues better than the recently released 4-disc set. Audio comes in 5.1 and while exceptional; we were still straining to hear some muffled dialogue. Most of the extras were ported from the 4-disc set, save the two other cuts of the movie and a few featurettes.
Remake Dawn benefits in both the video transfer and audio due to being more recent. The picture shows every speck of grime, while highlighting those crazy green hues inside the mall. Audiophiles will love the 5.1 lossless TrueHD soundtrack and the extras come straight from the standard-def DVD.
