E3 09: Top 10 things you need to know about today - Wednesday edition
The only E3 news worth reading. The only screens worth seeing
7) Final Fantasy XIV might not be PS3 exclusive for very long
Final Fantasy will be a new MMORPG for the PS3 and PC. It looks a lot like Final Fantasy XI – but it’s clearly totally new because it has a different number. Other than that, no one seems to know anything about Final Fantasy XIV – not even Square. But the company does know that the phrase, “… will be PS3 exclusive” didn’t end with the word, “forever.” According toJoystiq, Shinji Hashimoto, senior vice president of Square Enix said that “in terms of other hardware devices, including Microsoft’s, we’re considering all possibilities.”
Other vague details were revealed, like an estimated 2010 release date, a new Job system, races and classes that will be similar to ones seen in Final Fantasy XI (but again: totally different because this is a completely new game) and an expensive lookingtrailerwith no actual gameplay footage. We are loving the Panzer Dragoon-like airships, though.
8) Speaking of which, Nier may be a bigger deal than Final Fantasy XIV
The announcement of Final Fantasy XIV during the Sony press conference Monday set off a reaction that can only be described as electric. The crowd buzzed with genuine shock and excitement – which lasted exactly as long as it took to watch the trailer and realize the game is another MMO, at which point everyone muttered a deflated, “...oh.” And then began dreaming about the day we’ll hear something about Final Fantasy XV.
Luckily for publisher Square Enix, one of those other things is the game Nier. It’s a bleak-but-beautiful looking dark fantasy hack-and-slasher starring a guy with a gigantic sword – imagine that – whose trying to save his daughter from a plague called the “black virus.” Why exactly he believes this goal is best accomplished by cutting dozens upon dozens of demons into pieces rather than giving her some penicillin is beyond us. The practice of medicine was a bit different in those days, apparently.
9) There’s a new Zelda game for Wii
No, you didn’t blink and miss it: Nintendo didn’t mention this game even once at its press conference. But in a more intimate, semi-private session later on, Nintendo game guru Shigeru Miyamoto showed concept art from what he confirmed is the next game in the Legend of Zelda series. All we could really infer was that it has the same tone as the most recent Zelda game, Twilight Princess. Oddly, the series’ hero Link was holding his shield in his opposite hand – relevant, or a gaff? God only knows how long we’ll have to wait to find out.
10) Shell-ebrate good times dude – publisherUbisoft announces TMNT: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled
