E3 2011: New Super Smash Bros. game announced for 3DS and Wii U
New Super Smash Bros. game can be played together across both systems
Though it was only mentioned in passing, Nintendo has announced a new Super Smash Bros. game for both Wii U and the 3DS.Interstingly, the gamewill include multiplayer connectivitybetweenboth systems. The game development is being overseen by seriesveteran Masahiro Sakurai of HAL who's currently working on the 3DS gameKid Icarus: Uprising.
Above: Official first screen! Or not. Defintely not.
Given both systems' wireless capabilites, inter system play makes a ton of sense, though we wonder if people playing on the 3DS can just look at the TV screen the Wii U is streaming to. Will the 3DS be able to function as an additional controller in this sense? In the interest of fairness gameply will likely be identical on the two systems, though the Wii U user will obviously have some nicer graphics.
One of the only potential downsides we're seeing is that Nintendo offered a lot of control options for Super Smash Bros. Brawl including GameCube controller support for players looking for more traditional/precise controls. We know the Wii U has backwards support for Wii accessories, and hopefully that includes the Classic Controller. The 3DS seesm a little more limited in external control options, though the touch screens seems likely to be incorporated in some way. We can already see the new hardcoreplayers making rules: No items, No touch screen, Final Destination.
