Far Cry Instincts surprises
Ubisoft's desert island disc ensnares us with its secret new tricks and traps
The original Far Cry was so beautiful it could make you sob - and your PC weep. For a whole atoll of islands stretched across the shining blue sea, from the screen of your monitor to beyond the limits of your graphics card. It was the perfect holiday destination, so long as you packed an AMD 64 with the AK47 and factor 25.
So to make Instincts fit on the consoles, Ubisoft have been forced to rebuild Crytek's masterwork from the ground up. But, instead of just replicating and reducing the code from Coburg, the Montreal team have also found the time to innovate. And that is where we find them, knee deep in the latest addition to Instinct: the traps.
These hidden additions to the jungle scene have been introduced to add even more spice to the running gun battles. For Jack Carver can use them to his advantage, swinging branches into guards or spearing sentries silently, but the enemy can utilise them using their razor sharp AI to force you into the Claymore-coated trees.
So far there's no word on whether the traps can be used in the online game but we do know that Jack will be able to learn the skills required to make his own camouflaged devices, although he'll need to look sharp or suffer at the pointy end of his own handiwork.
Far Cry Instincts will land on these shores in March for PS2 and Xbox
