Final Divergent sequel to be split into two parts
The Divergent trilogy becomes a quadrilogy
The final book in Veronica Roth’s Bestselling Divergent trilogy will now be split into two films.
Following next year’s middle chapter, Insurgent , the series concluder will be released as Allegiant: Part 1 in March 2016 and Allegiant: Part 2 in March 2017.
Divergent has so far scored a strong $139m worldwide, and it’s no great surprise that Lionsgate are looking to follow The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn , Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay in making YA fans wait twice as long (and pay twice as much) to see the end of the story.
Shailene Woodley is set to return as teen-heroine Tris in the dystopian sci-fi adventure alongside Theo James, Jai Courtney and Miles Teller – with Robert Schwentke ( Red , R.I.P.D. ) taking over from Neil Burger in the director’s chair for the remaining three movies.
Allegiant is only a few pages longer than the first two books in Roth’s trilogy – posing questions about how, when and where the story will be split into two. Gaining an extra narrator in the form of Theo James’ Four, the obvious answer might be to focus each part of the final chapter on one of the star-crossed protagonists. But with the stakes getting higher and the conspiracies getting deeper – fans of the book might also welcome a longer running time to do the tightly knotting storyline justice.
We’ll have to wait another three years to find out for sure...
