Final Fantasy Tactics comes to iOS on Thursday

Square Enix announced over Twitter that the long-awaited iPhone port of PSOne classic Final Fantasy Tactics will hit the app store this Thursday for $14.99. It’s not a universal port, and the company says the iPad version is still coming, but it’s “at least 1 month behind.” Square Enix’s Facebook page has the announcement.

The game remains largely true to thePSP versionreleased in 2007 and includes the English voice actors that were absent from the original PlayStation version (1998). There are also several improvements, the most notable of which is that if you receive a call during gameplay, FF Tactics autosaves (even during combat), so that you can answer without worrying about losing progress.

If you’ve never had the chance to play this cornerstone of Japanese strategy RPGs, be thankful that you live in the future — a time when downloading one of the greatest games ever costs nothing more than the equivalent of about 15 copies of Angry Birds, a few minutes of WiFi connection, and whatever your monthly billing plan happens to be.

The iPad price has not been announced, but we would be surprised if it was more than a dollar or two away from the $14.99 iPhone app price tag.
