Action roguelike Ravenswatch marks its Nintendo Switch release by dropping its first major free update
Following a late 2024 launch across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, moreish action roguelike Ravenswatch is keeping the momentum going with a free update and some paid cosmetics to coincide with a Nintendo Switch release. And it's all available to experience right now.
Nightmares Unleashed is the Diablo-esque roguelike's first major free content update, and it focuses primarily on replayability and introducing newer content to keep things fresh.
One of the most notable features is a rework of the Key system. To remedy community complaints that have lingered since Early Access, developer Passtech Games – who you may recognize from acclaimed roguelite Curse of the Dead Gods – has made keys easier to locate by having them appear on the mini-map by Vision Towers or if you're simply near them.
And that's not all. All three Master Nightmares bosses now have differing attack patterns that change with each fight, ensuring challenge and replayability. Speaking of big bads, you've got two new mini-bosses to duel with. Abu Al Jaan, the ancestor of all the Jinns, awaits in Storm Island while Melion, the servant knight of King Arthur, awaits with his wolf pack in the sewers of Avalon.
Finally, you'll find plenty of new activities and map events on each new run through Reverie, as the developers wanted to ensure further that each playthrough feels different from the last. You can crash Blood Rituals to snag two keys, which is helpful for the new locked chests you might encounter. There are also Sacrificial Idols that allow you to sacrifice health for damage, Astral Shrines that let you reroll or upgrade two random talents, and much more.
All of that and more is available now in Ravenswatch, as the top-down hack-and-slasher is now available on the Nintendo Switch and has a new paid skin pack you can pick up.
Launched out of Early Access last year, Ravenswatch puts a story-like twist on the joy found in roguelikes and games like Diablo where you hack-and-slash your way through hordes of nightmarish creatures. Here, there are nine familiar faces to choose from who appear more violent than you'll likely remember, from Little Red Riding Hood and Sun Wukong to the Snow Queen.
There's a good reason for the darker demeanor, too, as Ravenswatch sees something called the 'Nightmare' invade the world of dreams, corrupting all it comes across. To push back the darkness, the titular Ravenswatch enlists heroes dealing with their own corruption.
As the plot unfolds, you visit three open maps filled with fable staples like enchanted forests and marshes alongside other nods to classic stories like One Thousand and One Nights and various Arthurian legends. While there, you'll aid inhabitants like the Three Little Pigs and pick up valuable rewards to make future battles against formidable foes easier.
With the Nightmares Unleashed update and Nintendo Switch launch, though, there's never been a better time to dip in, as each run has never been more divergent and the hack-and-slasher more widely available. Ravenswatch is out now.
