Starship Troopers: Extermination is adding a new enemy straight from the iconic film.

In a new dev diary at the Future Games Show at Gamescom sponsored by Sid Meier's Civilization VII, lead game designer Chaz Barker introduced the Tanker Bug. A huge, durable, fire-spitting enemy, Barker says that the Tanker Bug is rocking a whole suite of moves that all threaten to ruin your day.

"We're trying to make the Tanker Bug experience as close to the movie as possible," Barker explains, as this towering insect stomps across the landscape. This thing dwarfs the enemies around it, suggesting you'll need to use the full power of Starship Troopers: Extermination's 16-player squads if you want to see the end of it.

Elsewhere in the dev diary, lead environment artist Tami Para introduces an icy new planet for players to liberate. Populated by a 'bug meteor', it's home to creatures that have had time to evolve to their new surroundings, causing players all sorts of new problems.

Finally, game director Peter Maurice shows off single player mode, which he bills as an excellent way to get up to speed with the game's huge multiplayer parties. He also teases "a very robust roadmap" heading to Starship Troopers: Extermination with the game's console release this fall - from October 11, the game will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
