GamesRadar's potentially annual Platinum Chalice awards 2006
It's been a stupidly big year for games. Why don't we reduce it to a single glib article?
Winner: LocoRoco
Sony | PSP
When we say "WTF?" in the context of a Platinum Chalice, we mean it in the best way possible (so no, WTF: Work Time Fun doesn't get a Chalice just for having the name. Now shut up and read). LocoRoco was unlike anything we'd ever seen before, and its weird vibe had us charmed as soon as we saw it in motion. Bouncing a group of identical singing blobs around by tilting the world is bizarre as hell, and we loved every second of it.
We also loved that you couldn't play this game without cracking a smile - the nonsense songs were insanely catchy, the bright colors and curvy shapes were captivating and the overall theme was almost relentlessly happy and fun. By forcing our jaded, stone-like faces to grin once again, LocoRoco earns its Platinum Chalice like few other games on this list.
Honorable mention: God Hand
Capcom| PlayStation 2
The game stars Gene - who doesn't really seem to care that he's the hero. Even so, you'll want to watch as Gene spanks leather-clad girls and kicks his enemies in the nuts - while saving the world from The Poison Chihuahua.
