Interesting news from David Fincher’s Gone Girl adaptation this morning, with Entertainment Weekly revealing that the film’s third act will significantly deviate from the book.
Author Gillian Flynn wrote the script for the film, and reveals that she took the opportunity to significantly tinker with her original ending for the screen version...
“There was something thrilling about taking this piece of work that I’d spent about two years painstakingly putting together, with all its eight million LEGO pieces, and take a hammer to it and bash it apart and reassemble it into a movie,” says Flynn.
“Ben [ Affleck ] was so shocked by it," she continues. "He would say, ‘This is a whole new third act! She literally threw that third act out and started from scratch.’”
While there will be plenty of teeth-gnashing from fans of the book, the original ending did prove divisive with readers. In addition to that, it’s probably a canny commercial move, with the new ending likely to pique curiosity in those who might not previously have been interested...
Directed by Fincher and co-starring Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike and Neil Patrick Harris, Gone Girl will open in the UK on 3 October 2014.
