Guillermo del Toro says he is writing a Pacific Rim sequel
But doesn’t know whether it will be greenlit
Guillermo del Toro has revealed that he is currently writing a sequel to robots vs. monsters epic Pacific Rim , but admits he doesn’t know whether the project will be greenlit.
“We are writing the sequel,” said del Toro to IGN . “Travis Beacham and I are writing, so that is active. The decision to greenlight or not, that’s definitely above my pay rate.”
Despite the first film costing somewhere in the region of $190 million to make, it brought in a solid $407 million worldwide, suggesting that the studio may yet nibble at the prospect of a sequel.
Just which studio the decision falls to is unclear, with Warner and Legendary having gone their separate ways since the first film was made. Whoever it is, Pacific Rim 's slightly disappointing domestic performance may yet prove to be a key factor in the final decision.
Del Toro’s slate is looking increasingly busy over the next few years in any case, but we’ll be hoping the director is afforded the opportunity for one more go-around of titanic action. Guillermo, smash!
