Guillermo del Toro to tackle Trollhunters
Writing and directing kids horror for DreamWorks
Guillermo del Toro has added another awesome-sounding project to his list of awesome-sounding projects, having signed on to write and direct Trollhunters for DreamWorks Animation.
The fan favourite director, who recently bailed on The Hobbit to pursue projects that actually had a chance of getting made, has taken the reins on Trollhunters , which will be based on a novel that he submitted to publisher Hyperion recently.
“I wanted very much to develop a story that could be written for kids but dealt with a genre that was scary,” says del Toro. “It essentially combines fairy tales with modern times and is about how difficult it is to be kid.
“Normally, kids are idealised in animated films. But the growing pains, married with the notion that there is a world right next to us that is completely plagued by creatures of ancient lore, it's thematically fitting with the rest of my stuff.”
Not only will he be wading into animation directing for the first time, but del Toro will also be helping out a clutch of other projects at DreamWorks Animation, serving as consultant and executive producer on Kung Fu Panda 2, Puss In Boots and another secret project.
Which can only mean good things for the studio – everything del Toro touches certainly turns to gold (with the exception of the extraneous circumstances surrounding The Hobbit ).
