Hailee Steinfeld to star in indie version of Romeo And Juliet?
Carlo Carlie is attached to direct
Hailee Steinfeld may be only 14, but thanks to her Oscar-nominated role in True Grit , she’s far busier than your average moody teenager.
After being associated with the film adap of novel Forgotten and a new version of Sleeping Beauty , she’s now in talks to head up an adaptation of Romeo & Juliet .
Gosford Park ’s Julian Fellowes has written the script, which is said to be a more indified version of Shakespeare’s play (quite what that means we’re not sure yet), while Italian director Carlo Carlie ( Flight Of The Innocent ) will direct.
Would an ‘indie’ take on Romeo & Juliet pander to the Twilight crowd with the two doomed lovers now wearing hoodies and caught in the middle of a council flat war?
No word yet, but with a budget of just $15m and a shoot taking place in Italy, this new adaptation should be a low-key affair.
