Shoot-outs, lovers on the lam, a villain with dreadlocks: yes, this hit-and miss comedy sure does want to be True Romance .

Where the late Tony Scott’s movie was the real deal, alas, this is the ersatz facsimile that starts well but – like bad guy Bradley Cooper’s behind-bars encounter with an abusive Filipino – ends up a pain in the nethers.

Dax Shepard stars as a getaway driver who leaves Witness Protection to escort girlfriend Kristen Bell to a job interview, a decision that incurs his ex-associates’ wrath.

Theirs, though, will be nothing compared to audiences hoping for anything more than a derivative knock-off.
