Hugh Jackman reveals he will play Wolverine just one more time

Over the last couple of months, Hugh Jackman has discussed his future as Wolverine at length, suggesting that he’d be happy to keep on playing the role for as long as Fox want him to. However, his long run looks to be coming to an end, with the star revealing on Instagram that he’ll be hanging up the claws after one last outing…

“Wolverine… one last time,” reads the accompanying caption to a picture of Wolvie’s famous adamantium blades. Presumably, his final appearance will be in James Mangold’s sequel to The Wolverine, scheduled to arrive in 2017.

It had previously been understood that Wolverine would also feature in some capacity in X-Men: Apocalypse the preceding year. However, unless Jackman doesn’t count a brief cameo as a full appearance, it seems as though that will no longer be the case.

Jackman had recently alluded to the fact that the role will need to be recast eventually, and with the character proving consistently popular with audiences, it seems unlikely that Fox would opt to sideline the character in the long-run. In any case, Jackman will be leaving some serious shoes to fill…

X-Men: Apocalypse will open in the UK on 19 May 2016 and the US on 27 May 2016. The next Wolverine movie will arrive in the UK on 2 March 2017, and the US the following day.
