The Iceman is up for Top Gun 2

A sequel to Top Gun has been on the cards for years. Following the death of original director Tony Scott, the project understandably stalled and only recently started to pick up speed again. Today brings another flicker of hope as Val Kilmer has dropped news on his potential involvement: if it's getting made, he's up for it.

I just got offered #topgun2 - not often you get to say "yes" without reading the script..."It's starring Gene...

Kilmer went on to clear up the confusion that Gene Hackman and Francis Ford Coppola were involved: he was merely using them as examples of who an actor would never say no to. Next in line after those two would, naturally, be the producers of a second Top Gun movie. In the original, Kilmer played the bleach-blonde Iceman opposite Tom Cruise's Maverick. They butted heads and audiences loved it, but as Kilmer says nothing's confirmed while the film is developed.

Jerry Bruckheimer is producing once more and has confirmed that while Cruise isn't locked into a contract, the movie hinges on his return. And from what's been hinted at so far, the story will take place in the present day with the pair being called upon to prove that drone technology cannot replace a skilled pilot in the cockpit.
