James Cameron offers At The Mountains Of Madness update
“The design work is phenomenal”
James Cameron and Guillermo del Toro. Working together. Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, we speak no lies - the pair are currently deep in pre-production on an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s At The Mountains Of Madness , which del Toro will direct in 3D.
Now, Cameron has given an update on where the project stands. Though it still has yet to receive an official green light, the duo are doing their damndest to ensure the movie gets made – with style.
“We’re very, very actively pre-producing the film right now with Universal,” he tells FearNet. “The design work is phenomenal, both the three-dimensional and two-dimensional design work, the physical maquettes, the CG test scenes; the artwork is phenomenal.
“The fans certainly won’t want for a visual feast with this film. But there’s [ still ] a bunch of number-crunching and ‘How you gonna do it?’ and ‘How you gonna make it?’; ‘Where you gonna do it?’ All that stuff.”
Meanwhile, the director – who is also prepping Avatar 2 and 3 – made no bones about why he signed on to help make the movie:
“One word, one man – Guillermo. We’ve been friends for 20 years. We’ve been trying to work together, really, for that entire time. And it has never quite congealed. We’re both Lovecraft fans...
“He’s got a real vision for the film. It’s very, very well-developed in his mind. You know, I’m just there to facilitate his vision. I’m just there to try to get it made and help him do the movie that’s in his head.”
