We’ve heard of Director Jail – the place we’d like to put certain helmers for crimes against cinema. And while we might consider John McTiernan a candidate for the place after Rollerball, Die Hard earned him a Do Not Go To Jail card almost for life.
But now he’s facing the real-life equivalent after a federal judge in the US sentenced him to four months in prison for lying to the FBI about his links to disgraced detective Anthony Pellicano. He was also ordered to pay a $10,000 fine.
Seems that last year, the director entered a guilty plea about lying when he said the only time he used Pellicano’s wire-tapping services (the focus of Hollywood’s most controversial trial in years) was during his divorce. Turns out he also put a tap on producer chuck Roven, who also worked on Rollerball.
He’s going to appeal, but could soon be swapping his director’s hat for a prison uniform...
